Immediate caveat to start this blog: My IRL books + bookshelves aren’t going anywhere. The smell of old books will always be an instant turn-on for me. The feeling of running my fingertips over book spines is up there with foot massages and letting the sun soak my skin. The moment I stand in a library and look up into a cavernous space filled with thousands of books, I feel both infinite and infinitesimally small simultaneously. All those feelings made and make me fall in love with books. However, there are bountiful reasons why I love my Kindle too and I’m low-key obsessed with it at the moment. Those reasons might not compare to all the reasons why I love a soft paperback or an intricately-illustrated hardback (ugh heart eyes) but my e-reader gets a lot of love atm and deserves her moment.
Are Amazon Kindles worth it?
- The most important of all points – no one can see the filthy smut I’m reading. Sometimes we want to indulge in a bit of literary guilty pleasure without judgment. My Kindle lets me dive into some scandalous reads without anyone being the wiser. I can sit on the train feeling oh-so-sophisticated while secretly devouring some hotshot bizarre kraken romance. I love it.
- The £1 Kindle book deals have me in a chokehold. I bought 20 books in July for £20 (I do realise Amazon is bad and I should support local booksellers pls forgive me). Scrolling through those deals has become my new favourite pastime. It’s like a treasure hunt… for bookworms.
- For a girlie who’s obsessed with her Uniqlo bag(s) – this fits PERFECTLY. It slides right in, taking up barely any space. Now I can carry my entire library wherever I go without breaking a sweat (or my back).
- Long trips? No problem, bestie! Gone are the days of lugging multiple books in my suitcase (I can’t believe I once took Deathly Hallows on holiday). My Kindle holds my entire reading list in one slim device so I can actually read MORE when I’m away.
- Okay, I haven’t actually done this yet, but manifest this cosy setup with me: a Kindle stand and a page-turning clicker. Imagine being burrito-wrapped in a blanket, clicking away without ever having to expose your toasty arms to the cold. Snacks on demand.
- The battery life on this thing is mad! It’s always ready when I am, no charging required. There’s something magical about picking it up on a whim and diving right into a story without any “low battery” warnings.
So the answer is yes, getting a Kindle is 10000% worth it.
Why I’m trying to use my Kindle more
- It was a gift and not using it feels a bit like snubbing the giver. Time to put this baby to werk!
- Something about the Kindle helps with my decision fatigue when it comes to picking a new book. I tend to have much newer releases on there, which makes the choices refresher and more fun to pick from. Thanks again Kindle Daily Deals!
- I have a Kindle Unlimited subscription but never use it! I need to be in the habit of reading on my Kindle more in order to make use of it! I found a book called The Vine Witch that I was truly obsessed with in October last year (I wrote about it in my October Reading Wrap-Up 2023) and I want to uncover more gems like this
So there you have it – my unfiltered love letter to my Kindle. It’s not perfect, and yes, physical books will always have a special place in my heart. But for now, I’m embracing this digital reading revolution… one guilty pleasure at a time!
